Class Description: In this workshop each student will learn how to block print with natural dyes while working on an organic cotton bandana. Students will utilize Sophie’s personal collection of antique printing blocks in their own creation. After the bandanas are printed, each student will learn to dye their creation with one of two natural dye options. This workshop is fit for all experience levels, whether you are completely new to natural dyeing or have previous experience. Topics covered will include scouring, mordanting, the use of tannins, block printing paint types, and the general basics of naturally dyeing cellulose fibers.
List of items students need to bring: Students shall be mindful of their clothing as we will be using paints that can stain, an apron, rubber gloves and dark clothing is recommended.
BIO: Growing up in rural Wisconsin, Sophie has always lived a life centered around and integrated with nature. While studying textile arts at University of Wisconsin- Madison, she became fascinated with the world of dyeing and ancient techniques for textile design. After realizing the abundance of naturally occurring pigments in our environment, she began her journey of mastering natural dyeing. She specializes in botanically dyeing cellulose fibers, with a particular love for linen. Block printing became an early fascination for her, as the use of ancient techniques holds particular value in her eyes.
