Class Description: In this one-day workshop discover the art of indigo dyeing & vat making. This class is appropriate for all levels, no experience necessary! Learn the basics of indigo dyeing, while being introduced to aspects of dyeing which will impact the shades and patterns of textiles. You’ll learn to create and use two different vats and will create a set of napkins to get a grasp of the differences between the two vats.

List of items students need to bring: Students need to wear clothing and shoes that can be stained blue, as the class can be messy. If you would like to bring any experimental tying/binding materials or  want to try stitching, bring needles and strong thread.  Surgical gloves will available but it is recommended you bring rubber gloves to as you will need to submerse your hands in the vats as you dye your pieces.

BIO: Leanna Lytle is Tiny Blue Studio’s Botanist-turned-natural dyer. Growing up in rural Wyoming, she was surrounded by plants and gardening. As a child she was taught to sew and would craft garments for her dolls. This lifetime interest in textiles, gardening, and plants laid the foundation for the natural marriage of these passions via plant-based dyeing. Indigo being her first love of the art, she studied passions via plant-based dyeing. Indigo being her first love of the art, she studied it exclusively for about five years after getting a Botany degree from San Francisco State University. The intricacies of the process drew her in, every type of vat a new adventure, and the science of it all has kept her interest. Now, she grows and extracts as much of her own indigo pigment as possible on her property and sees her studies with plant-dyeing as a life-long venture and lifestyle.
