This month, our gallery is featuring the work of weavers from eleven different highland Maya communities in the state of Chiapas, Mexico.  On view and for sale will be tapestries, table runners, shawls, tablecloths, pillows and blouses, all incorporating ancient Maya weaving designs, woven on the backstrap loom.  Jolom Mayaetik, translates to “Women Who Weave”.  In 2018, the San Francisco Airport Museum hosted a show “Empowering Threads: Textiles of Jolom Mayaetik” featuring the weavings by the women from this town.  You can read more about them on the SFO museum website here. The University of Oklahoma Press published an English translation of the oral history created by the founding members of the cooperative and published in Spanish in  2007:  The book is not focused on weaving but is a kind of group ethnography that includes a chapter on weaving.
